John Day River -Steelhead Fly Fishing
Mention the John Day in fishing circles, and it is the river's prolific smallmouth bass fishery, not its steelhead, that generally come to mind. Many don't realize that the John Day is perhaps the most prolific wild steelhead fishery in America. Some estimate that nearly 50,000 wild fish returned to the John Day system in 2001. Add numbers like this to the thousands of stray fish that enter the lower 30 miles of the river and factor in that the John Day is not a very large river to begin with and you have fish-to-angler odds that can lead to some very epic days.
Little Creek Outfitters (Rivers to Reefs) has been fishing the John Day River since 1972. We have access to over 12 miles of private John Day canyon waters. These areas are landlocked by huge private ranches; the only access to the general public is by raft and involves a 4-8 day river trip. We can not guarantee total privacy for your group, but we can say with great confidence that there will be more anglers on any single run on the Deschutes than our whole 12 miles of river all within a 30-60 minute drive from Condon, OR. Our fishing approach is walk and wade, using the ranch roads for access. Most of our fishing is done with floating lines; many fish are taken on skating flies. As for our success, the numbers speak for themselves: During the 2001 season (from October through December) we had 70 anglers fish 40 days and hook 480 Steelhead.
During October 1- November 11th 2003.... 85 anglers fished 28 days and hooked 165 steelhead. The rains finally came and fishing picked up dramatically in December & January.
